We are seeking a dedicated and experienced mid-level Safety Officer to join our team, operating across our regional project sites in the Vaal area, Saldanha, and other strategic locations throughout South Africa. This pivotal role is essential for upholding our commitment to health and safety, ensuring strict adherence to regulatory requirements, and implementing robust safety protocols. The Safety Officer will play a crucial part in mitigating risks, promoting best practices, and fostering a proactive safety culture that safeguards our workforce and project integrity.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct daily site walkabouts and inspections to ensure all workforce and subcontractor activities comply with the approved HSE plan and the OHSAct.
- Stop any unsafe acts or hazardous conditions immediately and work with supervisors to implement safe corrective measures.
- Monitor high-risk activities closely, including hot work, confined space entry, working at heights, and rigging/lifting operations.
- Assist site supervisors and foremen in compiling and reviewing baseline and issue-specific Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) and Safe Work Procedures (SWPs).
- Facilitate or monitor daily Toolbox Talks and safety moments with site crews before shifts begin.
- Ensure all required permits-to-work (e.g., hot work, excavation, confined spaces) are correctly issued, verified, and closed out.
- Maintain, update, and manage the site Health and Safety File, ensuring all legal appointments, competencies, and medical certificates are current.
- Audit and verify subcontractor safety files before they mobilize and during their tenure on site.
- Check that all site plant, machinery, tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE) are inspected regularly and logged accordingly.
- Act as a first responder to any site incidents or near-misses, securing the scene and ensuring medical attention is provided if necessary.
- Assist the Safety Manager in conducting incident investigations and generating root-cause reports.
- Develop and implement site-specific safety plans for civil engineering projects.
- Ensure strict compliance with OSHA, local, and company safety regulations.
- Implement effective emergency response procedures and conduct regular drills.
- Evaluate subcontractor safety programs and performance on all projects.
- Manage and maintain comprehensive safety documentation and training records.
- Conduct routine hazard assessments and safety inspections on construction sites.
