About the Role

Overview

Our company stands at the forefront of delivering critical infrastructure projects that shape communities and drive economic growth across South Africa. We are committed to excellence, innovation, and impactful contributions, fostering an environment where dedicated professionals can thrive and make a tangible difference. Join a team celebrated for its collaborative spirit and unwavering pursuit of project success, contributing to a legacy of quality and reliability.

We are seeking a highly experienced and results-oriented Construction Manager to join our Construction Department. This senior-level role is pivotal to the successful execution of our large-scale, multi-disciplinary projects located across the Vaal area, Saldanha, and other regional project sites in South Africa. The Construction Manager will be instrumental in leading site operations, ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget, directly impacting our operational efficiency and reputation for excellence.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead all day-to-day on-site construction operations, ensuring works progress strictly in accordance with the master project schedule, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Optimize resource allocation, including the deployment of direct labor crews, plant, machinery, and materials across multiple active fronts.
  • Identify potential execution bottlenecks early and implement aggressive acceleration or recovery plans to mitigate delays.
  • Manage the site budget effectively, monitoring expenditures, waste factors, and production outputs to prevent cost overruns.
  • Oversee subcontractor execution, ensuring their deliverables meet contractual scope, schedule, and quality benchmarks.
  • Assist the commercial team by identifying scope changes, variations, and documenting site delays to support claims.
  • Partner with the Site Safety and Quality Managers to champion a zero-harm site culture and enforce uncompromising compliance with the OHSAct, EMPr, and ISO 9001 quality plans.
  • Ensure all works undergo regular Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) sign-offs, minimizing rework and driving progressive compilation of the Manufacturing Data Record (MDR).
  • Act as the primary operational point of contact on-site for the client's resident engineer, consultants, and third-party inspectors.
  • Lead daily and weekly site progress meetings, providing accurate, transparent updates on milestones, challenges, and upcoming critical paths.
  • Lead project teams through all phases of commercial building construction.
  • Oversee site operations, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and quality standards.
  • Manage subcontractor performance, contracts, and complex dispute resolution.
  • Develop and implement robust construction methodologies and best practices.
  • Drive value engineering initiatives to optimize project costs and efficiency.
  • Monitor project budgets, forecasting expenditures and mitigating cost overruns.

Project Scope and Expertise

This role demands a proven track record of successful site execution on large-scale infrastructure projects, including acting as a lead Construction Manager on multi-disciplinary EPC projects. Specific expertise is required in areas such as:

  • Bulk water, gas, or fuel pipeline networks, encompassing trenching, welding, and laying.
  • Bulk storage tanks (API 650 standard), pressure vessels, and heavy structural steel installations.
  • Heavy civil works, concrete foundations, piling, and industrial earthworks.

Workforce Management Scale

The successful candidate must demonstrate proven experience in effectively managing diverse site workforces of 100+ personnel, including both direct labor and specialized subcontractors, to ensure cohesive and productive operations.
