We are seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Senior Safety Manager to champion our safety initiatives across our critical operations in the Vaal area and Saldanha, South Africa. This senior-level position is pivotal in ensuring the continuous improvement of our safety management systems and fostering a proactive safety culture. The successful candidate will be instrumental in guiding our teams towards achieving best-in-class safety performance, playing a crucial role in protecting our most valuable resources – our people and our environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive, project-specific Health, Safety, and Environmental management plans aligned with OHSAct, ISO 45001, and ISO 14001 frameworks.
  • Instill a proactive safety culture across site teams, subcontractors, and vendors, emphasizing a zero-harm philosophy.
  • Act as the primary interface on all safety matters between project leadership, clients, engineers, and government authorities (e.g., Department of Employment and Labour).
  • Lead detailed Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) tailored to complex EPC environments, including work at heights, heavy lifting, confined spaces, and hazardous industrial zones.
  • Conduct regular site audits and safety inspections to identify non-conformance, ensuring immediate corrective and preventative actions (CAPA) are closed out.
  • Ensure all statutory requirements, site permits, and legal appointments under the Construction Regulations are up-to-date and compliant.
  • Lead the investigation of all incidents, near-misses, and environmental flashes using root-cause analysis methodologies.
  • Compile and present detailed daily, weekly, and monthly HSE performance metrics to project management and executives.
  • Vet, monitor, and audit the safety management plans and files of all on-site subcontractors to ensure alignment with prime contract requirements.
  • Line-manage site safety officers, providing mentorship, ongoing training, and performance evaluations.
  • Lead comprehensive incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Architect site-specific safety plans for complex infrastructure projects.
  • Evaluate new construction equipment and methodologies for inherent safety risks.
  • Collaborate with project managers to integrate safety protocols into project timelines.
  • Conduct rigorous safety audits and inspections across multiple construction sites.
  • Oversee daily safety operations, hazard identification, and risk mitigation strategies.
